Do you have a giant copy of the yellow pages in your kitchen? Or do you search for everything local online? You’re not alone.  Most people who need to know what time the library opens this Saturday or when your favorite coffee shop closes will most likely look online. This is so much faster than thumbing through a big book that leaves your fingers black to find a phone number and call the library.

Online is how most local people will find your business, too.  When adding your business listing to sites like Google My Business, Bing Places and Yahoo Local, there are a few golden rules you should follow to get the most out of your local business listings.

  1.  Claim your profile: This consists of going through Google’s verification steps.
  2.  Upload pics:  Pictures of your business should look professional and represent you or your brand.
  3.  Ask for reviews:  Most sites don’t care if you come right out and ask customers to give you a review so don’t be afraid to ask.
  4.  Don’t worry about bad reviews:  Bad reviews are good. Seriously. They make the good reviews look great.
  5.  Add a phone number:  Your phone number should be local rather than an 800 number since an 800 number can not determine if your business really is local or not.
  6. Add a physical address:  To reinforce your geographic location include your address in all your business listings.
  7. Add your hours: Open at 7 am on Sunday?  Your customers should be able to access this information in your business listing.
  8. Pretend you’re a customer:  When you think like your customers, you can come up with the right keywords and keyword phrases to target your customers.
  9. Do you have more than one location?  If you have multiple locations you will need multiple business pages, one for each location.  These should link to separate pages on your website for each location.
  10. Update:  If any information changes be sure to update your business listings right away.
